Roadmaps & Shortcuts:

Around the turn of the century, I was an event producer.  Technology was different then, but one thing that has not changed, was that we needed to provide directions.  We did not have the current luxury of sharing the location pin so that we can enter it into a navigation app and get turn by turn instructions from our exact starting point to the event. Either written on the invite, or an included insert, would be directions to the event with very vague starting points like if coming from Los Angeles, take the 405S exit Harbor Blvd, and so forth.  Or, if coming from San Diego take the 5N to the 405N, exit Harbor Blvd.  Even though these directions were more detailed at the end, you still needed to figure out your start.  So you grabbed your Thomas Bros Guide or later printed directions from MapQuest.

This ambiguity to specificity is how so many of us go about goal planning, or making major decisions.  We know the end game, to get to the location, but we really don’t know where to start.  What if I told you that the key component to success in achieving the end game can be found by extending the metaphor?

Here we go, it is now present day, and we want to get to an event.  The invitation no longer has the cryptic map attached, but instead just gives the address of the event.  No problem, it is the day of and we are dressed and ready to enjoy an exciting event.  We may have already glanced at the directions prior, in order to get an idea of how long of a commute we may have, but it is now go time.  We enter the address into our chosen GPS and suddenly a voice is there with us in our car, ready to tell us exactly where to go.  It is so specific, that it tells you how many feet before turning off a street you have driven everyday.  The voice and the map on your app continues to tell you exactly where and when to go, it even gives you an ETA for the route it has you on.  What makes this specificity possible?  The app can give you this detail, because it knows exactly where you are in comparison to where you told it you want to be.  Let’s not stop there though, you even get to know if you need to change routes because of traffic conditions, or in some cases, if there is police activity nearby so watch your speed.  Even better though, if you miss a turn, the system will re-route you so that you still make it to your destination, without losing a lot of time. You may have figured it out, or you may still be wondering, “so what is this secret key component to success?”  It is awareness.  Today’s GPS technology is able to give you specific directions, let you know the traffic conditions and re-route you when necessary, because the satellite provides an awareness of you as well as your surroundings.
